How to Choose the Right University

Choosing a university involves more than looking at league tables. Students should consider course content, teaching style, assessment methods and opportunities for placements or study abroad. Campus culture, accommodation options and support services also play a big role in student wellbeing and success.

For Tandridge students, commuting can be a realistic and cost-effective option, particularly for London universities. Compare travel times and costs from stations such as Oxted, Caterham and Lingfield, and consider railcards for students.

Trends in Higher Education

Higher education is changing rapidly. Degree apprenticeships are growing, allowing students to earn while they learn. Flexible and online study options are expanding, and universities are placing more emphasis on employability, mental health support and sustainability. Many institutions are also forging closer partnerships with industry to ensure graduates have relevant skills.

The Open University remains a popular choice for adults in Tandridge who want to study part-time alongside work and family commitments.

Commuting Versus Living on Campus

One of the biggest decisions for Tandridge students is whether to commute or move away. Commuting to London universities is entirely realistic thanks to frequent services from Oxted, Caterham, Lingfield and Hurst Green into London Bridge and Victoria. Students who commute can save substantially on accommodation costs, which are particularly high in London, and maintain close links with family and friends at home.

However, living in halls or student housing offers its own benefits. It provides independence, easier participation in societies and social life, and the chance to fully immerse yourself in university culture. Campus universities such as Surrey, Sussex and Royal Holloway offer a strong sense of community and are within reasonable travelling distance for weekend visits home.

Some students choose a hybrid approach, living on campus in their first year to settle in and build friendships, then commuting in later years to save money. Others start by commuting and move closer if they find travel tiring. Whatever you decide, factor in travel costs, journey times, timetable patterns and personal preferences. Visiting campuses at different times of day can give a realistic picture of what daily life would be like.

Student finance, scholarships and bursaries should also be explored early, as many universities offer support for students from lower-income households.

Although Tandridge has no university of its own, its students are spoilt for choice. Within a short journey are some of the most prestigious and innovative universities in the world. By researching carefully, attending open days and thinking about your goals, you can find the institution that best supports your academic and personal ambitions.
