Interior Design Trends

Biophilic design, which brings nature indoors through plants, natural materials and organic shapes, resonates strongly in the Forest of Dean. Warm, earthy colours such as forest greens, terracotta and ochre are replacing cool greys. Handcrafted and locally made pieces are increasingly valued for their character and sustainability.

Multifunctional spaces continue to be important. Home offices, flexible guest rooms and open-plan living areas with defined zones reflect changing lifestyles. Energy efficiency is also influencing design, with insulation, heat pumps and efficient glazing integrated thoughtfully into interiors.

Designing Period Properties

Many Forest homes have historic character that should be preserved. Thick stone walls, flagstone floors and exposed beams require breathable materials and sympathetic finishes. Experienced designers understand how to modernise kitchens and bathrooms without compromising original features, and they can advise on listed building considerations where relevant.

How to Choose an Interior Designer

Review portfolios to ensure a designer's style aligns with your taste. Discuss your budget honestly and ask how fees are structured, whether hourly, fixed or a percentage of project costs. Clarify the scope of services, from initial concepts to project management and installation.

Communication is key. A good designer listens carefully, asks questions about how you live and presents ideas clearly. Ask for references from previous clients and, if possible, visit completed projects.

Working with Local Craftspeople

One of the advantages of commissioning interior design in the Forest of Dean is access to a strong community of local makers. The district has a long tradition of woodworking and stone craft, and today independent joiners, furniture makers, potters, blacksmiths and textile artists continue that heritage. Many local designers have established relationships with these craftspeople, allowing them to commission bespoke pieces such as oak dining tables, handmade kitchen cabinetry, forged ironwork and locally woven fabrics. Using regional makers not only creates unique interiors with a strong sense of place but also supports the local economy and reduces the environmental impact of long-distance sourcing.

Conclusion

The Forest of Dean's interior design community brings creativity, craftsmanship and local sensitivity to homes and businesses across the district. Whether you are renovating a historic cottage, styling a new build or creating a standout holiday let, the firms featured here can help bring your vision to life. Invest in good design and enjoy spaces that feel truly at home in this remarkable landscape.
