Alder Hey Children’s Hospital cares for more than 300,000 children every single year, with more than 300 beds occupied at one time. This makes the hospital one of the continent’s largest, with very few facilities across Europe much busier than this one. Alder Hey treats specialist conditions in children, but also look after minors with more common illnesses.  

2) Royal Liverpool University Hospital

This is the city’s major research and teaching hospital and by far the largest and busiest hospital in both Cheshire and Merseyside. The Royal Liverpool University Hospital also boasts the UK’s largest emergency department of its kind, providing plenty of reassurance for nearby residents. Its unique location right at the heart of the city of Liverpool has meant the Royal has become somewhat of a landmark, too. With approximately 850 beds, this hospital can handle high volumes too.

Mossley Hill Hospital specialises in adult mental health and social work services – and receives a good reputation for it too. The hospital tends to deal primarily with older patients and care is provided for the elderly in both outpatient clinics and within their own homes where patients and continually assessed and asks to take part in various activities to help their recovery. With a Google review of 4.8 stars, Mossley Hill Hospital deserves its spot in our top three.

4) Whiston Hospital

Whiston Hospital is based further out of the city, towards Warrington and specialises in burns and plastic surgery treatments. It is an acute general hospital, meaning it treats conditions that are severe albeit brief. The facility opened just over 10 years ago with state-of-the-art facilities costing more than £300 million. The hospital also boasts a maternity department and dedicated stroke unit, as well as an A&E team.

5) Liverpool Women’s Hospital

Solely for women, Liverpool Women’s Hospital is a research facility primarily focused on obstetrics, gynaecology and neonatology and has been this way since 1994, for more than 25 years. Plenty of funded research takes place here, with somewhat less of a focus on treating patients, compared to those hospitals already mentioned. None the less, Liverpool Women’s Hospital earns itself a respectable Google review.

6) The Walton Centre

The Walton Centre in Liverpool is centred entirely around neurology. In fact, it is the only UK hospital that is solely dedicated to this cause, as well as treating spinal and pain management conditions. Said to offer world-class service, the centre boasts rave reviews – and for good reason. The hospital’s staff perform approximately 2,000 emergency surgical cases every year, which certainly keeps them busy. 3.5 million people from Liverpool and beyond – stretching as far as Manchester and North Wales – fall inside the hospital’s catchment area.

7) Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital

This very specialist hospital has twice been rated as “outstanding” by the Care Quality Commission in the past and offers treatment for conditions including cystic fibrosis and several severe heart conditions. Its catchment area includes 2.8 million people, far more than just the population of Liverpool city itself and stretching as far as the Isle of Man. The hospital puts the quality of the patient experience first and has received high acclaim as a result.

8) St Catherine’s Health Centre

Formerly St Catherine’s Hospital, the new health centre is a community hospital in Tranmere, not far from Liverpool city centre. The hospital is well connected and boasts free car parking for up to three hours and great bus and rail connections both very closeby. The doctors and nurses here receive excellent plaudits and as a result, the small health centre has reasonable reviews.

9) Aintree University Hospital

Well managed by the Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Aintree University Hospital initially opened during the First World War to treat infectious diseases and is known for its treatment of trauma suffering patients. Rated reasonably well now, the hospital hasn’t always received the best reviews with the Care Quality Commission expressing its concerns in the past.

Another large acute hospital, Arrow Park takes its name from the park in which it is situated at the heart of the Wirral on Merseyside. Described as a patient-centric environment, the hospital always gets a decent review from those who have stayed there and has the capacity for a sizeable 900 beds, making it one of the bigger hospitals in the immediate area.
